4 Essential Oils Combos to Fight Colds for your Diffuser

Diffusing is a gentle and safe method to relieve colds. It works through inhalation, where it allows your lungs to absorb essential oils, affecting the brain and releasing neuro-chemicals to fight colds. Most essential oils are antiseptic, antibacterial, and disinfectant. These qualities possess a great effect in shaking up our environment, and therefore altering the internal vibration of viruses and illness.
I highly suggest purchasing a cold diffuser from a reputable store, or placing a small saucer of cold water near a vent. Never place essential oils under a flame or hot element. Essential oils are highly volatile and flammable, and they will oxidize and be rendered useless. Place 5-7 drops of essential oil(s) in a diffuser or small saucer (a blend of 2 or 3 may be used if desired). Here are some cold warrior essential oils:

  1. Oregano: Oregano is highly effective against chronic and acute colds. Very potent and strong oil and especially excellent to diffuse as you feel a cold coming on! Highly antimicrobial, antiviral, antibacterial. Helps a system of prolonged illness and congestion. Oregano is a very intense oil, so it is best used in small doses for a short period of time.
  2. Rosemary + Lavender: For those who are exhausted and fatigued, use this powerful combo to ramp up alertness and invigoration during the day. Besides being highly stimulating, this combo also helps release toxins, while strengthening lungs against colds, flu, bronchitis, asthma, and other respiratory ailments.  Do not use within first five months of pregnancy.
  3. Geranium: One of the top immune-boosting oils, it encourages the system to produce white blood cells to fight off colds. It is so effective, that it is also known as an “anti-cancer” oil. Internally stimulating, geranium improves circulation in hands and feet. The scent is similar to lavender, but stronger, and can help lift anxiety and depression.  Known as a woman’s oil, it’s also wonderful in balancing hormones.
  4.  Ginger + Orange: When the weather is damp and cold, making your joints feel achy, ginger and orange synergize well. Warming and stimulating, it helps the body to adjust to when you feel “under the weather” with a cold. The orange helps to uplift moods and calms nervousness. As an added benefit, this combo also aids in loss of appetite, painful digestion, and gas.

Using oils in a diffuser is an easy method for home use at any stage of your cold. I’d recommend choosing the oil or combo based on your symptoms, and what smells pleasant to you. Get well soon!
